Sedation Dentistry

At South Hills Dental Arts, we understand that many patients will avoid the dentist or neglect their treatment altogether due to fear. For those with dental anxiety or those who feel stressed about going to the dentist can benefit greatly from our sedation dentistry.

We offer a variety of sedation options including IV sedation, oral sedation or Nitrous Oxide. These sedation methods are used for patients with high dental anxiety and helps them to relax quickly. This type of sedation may be necessary for extensive dental procedures.

For patients who are getting dental implants or undergoing a full mouth reconstruction, staying comfortable is most important. This will ensure that you do not feel any discomfort or pain during your procedure. We work with an expert anesthesiologist to ensure that you are monitored throughout the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Some dental plans do cover sedation dentistry, especially for children or adults who suffer from dental anxiety. In some cases, dental plans will not cover it because they see it as a luxury or optional treatment. Dental plans may also cover your sedation, depending on your situation.

You will be evaluated by your dentist to determine your candidacy. In general, dental sedation is used for patients who have a sensitive gag reflex, require a complex or invasive procedure, have dental anxiety, are unable to remain still during the procedure due to a physical or mental disability.

Working with an anesthesiologist, using sedation during your dental procedure is completely safe. We constantly monitor our patients under sedation, and we also check your medical history prior to sedation to ensure it is safe for you.

Nitrous oxide is a type of gas, also known as laughing gas. It is used to reduce pain and anxiety during dental procedures. It is administered through a nosepiece, and you are awake throughout the procedure.

A local anesthetic is used to numb an area of your mouth while performing certain dental procedures. This is administered through an injection into the inner cheek or gum.

Oral sedation or pill sedation is used to calm patients during dental procedures. For oral sedation, you will take a sedative drug via a pill prior to your appointment.

For IV sedation, an anti-anxiety drug is administered through an IV into the bloodstream during your dental treatment. This is sometimes called sleep or twilight dentistry. Rather than putting you to sleep, you will be awake but will feel relaxed and at peace.

General anesthesia is a state of unconsciousness that is produced by an anesthesiologist. During this state, you will not remember or feel anything during your procedure. You will also remain still and will not move.
