Gum Recession Treatment
What is Gum Recession Treatment?
Gum recession can occur for a variety of reasons, and treatment involves identifying and addressing the underlying issue. More than just a cosmetic concern, untreated gum recession can cause teeth to become loose and even fall out in more advanced stages.
At South Hills Dental Arts, we use the minimally-invasive Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™) to provide our patients with immediate, beautiful results with no cutting, sutures, or long healing times. In a single visit, you can restore the health and beauty of your smile.
The Pinhole Surgical Technique Treatment Process
Creating the Pinholes
After numbing the area, your dentist will use a fine-point needle to create a small pinhole above the gum line.
Moving the Gums
Your dentist will insert a special dental instrument into the small opening to gently free the gums and guide them into the proper position. Collagen strips will then be placed to help stabilize the gums and encourage healing.
Remarkably, healing often occurs overnight! Most patients can resume their normal routines in 24-48 hours.
Digital Smile Design Experience
With Digital Smile Design, we can create 3D models of your teeth and gums, allowing for precise treatment planning and a preview of your final results. You’ll be able to see what your smile will look like post-op, before treatment even begins.
Pinhole Surgical Technique Benefits
No scalpels. No sutures. Just a small pinhole and no lasting side effects.
You’ll see instantly pleasing results with PST instead of having to wait weeks.
Most patients are completely healed within 24-48 hours after their procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Gum recession is most often a symptom of periodontal (gum) disease. However, there are a few additional factors that can cause your gums to recede, such as teeth grinding, and aggressive brushing and flossing habits. Genetics can also play a role in gum recession.
The PST is virtually pain free! Because there are no incisions, stitches, or tissue grafts required, this minimally-invasive technique, when paired with a local anesthetic, is a quick and comfortable procedure.
